Pat Hennessy was reared in the
Dublin Road area of Limerick City.
From a well known GAA background, Pat was educated at the
Christian
Brothers School, Sexton Street, Limerick. Pat was a member on the
famous Harty Cup and Dean Ryan teams between 1954 and 1967 when
the Sexton Street side won the 4 in a row "Harty Cup
Titles". Pat also
played minor hurling with Limerick in the 1960's.
Pat sings an emigration song, which tells the story of our young
people's
plight in the past.
My Home in Garryowen:
This song was first recorded by Ger Cusack
and attributed to the composer Pete St. John. However the origins
of this
song go back to the early 20th century and the reference to
Doneraile,
in Co. Cork would appear to substantiate this as Limerick people
had little
regard for the citizens of Doneraile who they felt did little
work and were
more interested in gambling. Doneraile was the site for the first
steeplechase
event between the towns/villages of Doneraile, Buttevant and
Charleville.
