Ger (Gimger) Cronin is also a
native of Thomondgate and was an avid
sportsman in his youth. Ger played with Ballynanty Rover F.C. and
also
with Limerick F.C. He also played Gaelic Football with Treaty
Sarsfield
G.A.A and was a member of the famous Thomond R.F.C team of 1971
that won the Munster Junior Cup. Ginger willl also be remembered
by
Presentation R.F.C as the player who destroyed their dream of
winning
a unique double of Junior Cup and Transfield Cup honours with his
famous run from his own try line in the dying minute of their tie
in the Junior
Cup to win the game for Thomond R.F.C. Presentation R.F.C went on
to
win the Transfield Cup while Thomond R.F.C won the Junior Cup in
that year.
Since then Ginger has developed
a reputation as a ballad singer.
During the summer months he can be found entertaining the
Limerick holiday
crew in Kilkee, Co. Clare and during the winter months in St.
Patrick's G.A.A
Club in Rhebogue. Ginger sings Tom Glynn's song "Dear Old
Thomondgate".
He sings two songs on our CD/Cassette. "Dear Old
Thomondgate" as composed
by Tom Glynn and "Shannonagolden" as composed by Sean
McCarthy.
