Dermot Kelly is a hero of Limerick
folklore as far back as the mid 1950's.
He first came to prominence as a star in the Limerick hurling
team of 1955.
This team was trained by Mick Mackey and became known as
"Mackeys Greyhounds" This team defeated hot favourites
Clare and
included in this team were other hurling legends such as Ralph
Prendergast
and Viviene Cobbe. Dermot played with Claughen G.A.A and was a
bank
manager by profession. He later became known as the singing bank
manager
and composed many fine ballads such as "Limerick my
Home" and
"Patsy McHugh" Dermot Kelly sings two songs on this CD
as follows:
Dromcollogher
The composer of this song was the renowned Percy French who
wrote fine
ballads about various landmarks around Ireland. Perhaps his most
famous
ballads are " The Mountains of Mourne" and the
"West Clare Railway".
Dermot sings a great version of Druncollogher and gets the
message across very well.
Boys of the Yellow Road
This song is composed by Dermot and is about the famous All
Ireland Rugby
League Final of 1993 between Young Munster's R.F.C and St. Mary's
R.F.C
at Landsdowne Road, Dublin. Dermot describes this as one of his
most enjoyable
days at a sporting event with all kinds of everything thrown in,
from black puddings,
to Do Do Redden and the goats and the New Zealand Pope (Brent
Pope)
throwing his weight around.
