Ann Mulqueen is from Castleconnell in
County Limerick and was a
neighbour of Mick Mackey and his brother John who played on the
great Limerick teams of the 1930's and 1940's. Ann is a lifelong
supporter on the revival of the Irish language and is currently
residing
in the Gaeltach area of Ring, Co. Waterford. Ann is a well known
traditional
ballad singer and collector of poems, which she commits to song.
She performs these songs unaccompanied, as is the traditional
method.
The songs provided by Ann are:
Lament for Mick Mackey:
The composer of this balled is Criostoir
Mac Gearailt, a native of Fedamore.
The composer wrote this poem in September 1982 after the death of
Mick Mackey. Criostoir is a life long supporter of the G.A.A and
of his
native Limerick. He now lives in Salthill, Galway.
Falls of Doonass:
This song in praise of the Falls of
Doonass was written 100 years ago.
>Ann Mulqueen got it from her grandmother Brigid Mulqueen who
was born
beside the Falls. The author of the song is unknown but it is
believed that it
was written by a parish priest of that time.
