Grade 4 Match Reports

UL vs Analog - 09-02-2011 (away)

A trip out to Analog Sports Club last wednesday produced a string of closely fought matches with UL trying to follow up a winning performance from the previous week. Chris lost out narrowly in the mens singles with Caragh also coming up against a very strong opponent on the night. Alison and Natalie played a very good doubles match to get the first points for the team but unfortunately James and Wilbert could not repeat this. Analog came out on top in the mixed winning 2 of 3 matches to take the overall contest 5-2 in the end. Next up is a home match against Foynes.

UL vs Trinity - 02-02-2011 (home)

The match against Trinity got off to a good start with both Phil and Jenny winning their singles matches and Natalie and Alison picking up a win in the ladies doubles. Wilbert and James lost a tight game in the third set but UL were doing well so far leading into the mixed. The team produced a solid display in the mixed to win the match 5-2 overall. Only 3 games remaining with a semi final position still within reach.

UL vs Effin - 23-02-2011

The Grade 4 team had a home match against Effin last Wednesday hoping to continue their decent run of results. Jenny Critchley got the team off to a good start with a victory in the ladies singles but unfortunately the remaining matches didn’t go as well as hoped. Most games went to three sets with only a couple of points separating the teams in the end but Effin managed to come out on top with the final score standing at 6-1. UL hope to make the trip to Effin in a couple of weeks and return with a better result in order to set them up for the remainder of the season. Next up are Trinity who visit the Arena this week with the Grade 4 team hopeful they can get back to winning ways.

Trinity vs UL - 15-02-2011

Tuesday 15th Feb saw the UL Grade 4 team make the trip to Trinity to try and continue their progress in the league. In the ladies singles game, Jenny Critchley came up against a very strong opponent and took her all the way but came out on the wrong side of the result. Chris Quill also had a tough match but the Trinity player took the game in the third set. Our ladies doubles pair of Alison Grehan and Natalie Brown played an excellent game to defeat their opponents in the third match but unfortunately the men’s pairing of Phil Brown and James Scully lost out narrowly. 3-1 down after the first bunch of matches the three mixed teams dug deep in order to produce winning displays led by Natalie and Chris and followed by Jenny and James, with Alison and Phil making sure of the victory in a tense final game. The return match against Trinity is set to take place in a couple of weeks in what is sure to be another close encounter.

UL vs Mungret - 31-01-2011

The return leg of the Grade 4 match against Mungret meant home advantage for our team who were playing their first game of the new year.
Mungret proved victorious in the first match of the season in Limerick city so UL were hoping to turn the tables this time around.

Jenny Critchley got us off to a good start with victory in her singles game and Natalie Brown and Alison Grehan followed that up with a win in the ladies doubles. Unfortunately Chris Quill came out on the wrong side on the mens singles and James Scully and Wilbert Sisson lost out in the tight mens doubles game. The mixed games were also very close but Mungret were too strong and they took 2 of the 3 mixed games to leave the final result at 4-3 to Mungret. The UL team can take solace in the knowledge that they were up against the strongest team in the league and can use their performance as a stepping stone for the remaining games of the season.

Grade 6 Match Reports

Trinity vs UL - 10-11-2011

The night which was seen as an important night in UL's chances of further progression in the league started with Ronan Fraser losing a very hard fought game of singles. This loss however was quickly cancelled out by Róisin Flynn winning the ladies singles in a convincing two sets. Next up was the ladies double partnership of Bridie Welsh and Dee Lynch who after a slow start found their form and took another game for UL. The men's doubles between James Power and David Hayes was lost in the third set leaving the game at 2-2 going into the mixed. First up was James and Bridie who took the game in the third set keeping the partnerships 100% record intact. Next came Dee and Ronan showing probably their best performance of the season against tough opposition winning the game in straight sets. Finally was the last game of the night with David and Róisin winning another close battle at the end taking the last set 21-19. With three games left in the season UL are poised well for the playoffs. Well done everyone.

UL vs Newcastlewest - 02-02-2011

The match started with two very closely fought singles matches with Anna Mitchell and Ronan Fraser both losing by the narrowest of margins. Next up was Bridie Welsh and Dee Lynch a new partnership which worked very well and took the ladies doubles in an impressive two sets. The men's doubles was another close encounter with James Power and David Hayes emerging victorious in the third set.

With the game now tied at 2 games each the mixed were going to be crucial. The now familiar pairings of UL all worked well together and all three mixed were won in two sets. James Power and Bridie Welsh winning the first mixed, Ronan Fraser and Anna Mitchell in the second and David Hayes and Dee Lynch in the third. With this victory further progression into the latter stages of the competition is looking ever more likely. Well done everybody.
