Musical Development
I began by going to piano lessons with the renowned teacher / choirmaster and MD Monsieur August Toremans. In my early teens I took up the trumpet which became my first instrument. When I had developed a sufficient level of proficiency on the trumpet I began playing in several brass and reed bands, ensembles and the local youth orchestra. After leaving school I did a foundation course in music at the West London Institute of Higher Education. Here under the guidance of internationally renowned instrumental experts I continued to expand and develop performance techniques and repertoire which lead to my achieving a distinction in grade eight. My arrival at the West London Institute also marked my introduction to choral singing which I have enjoyed ever since and while I was there I also took part in the musicals Fiddler on the Roof & The Pyjama Game . In September 1984 I began the BA(Hon's) in music at the University of Ulster at Jordanstown. While studying at U.U. I continually developed as a performer, which was complimented by an increasing appreciation and knowledge of composition, history and analysis of music, acoustics and the psychology of music. I received critical acclaim for my performance as the solo trumpet in the Messiah. I joined the Irish Youth Choir in 1986 and was a member for nearly ten years. In June 1988 I successfully completed the Music Teachers Diploma at the University of Ulster. I began working as a peripatetic brass instrumental tutor with the Western Education and Library Board in September 1988. My work in the Western area consisted of the tutoring of large numbers of students, from every background, the instruments of the brass family . While living in Derry I took part in the musicals : The Merry Widow, Kiss Me Kate, Patience and Kismet as well as playing in the orchestra during the short lived Derry Festival of Light Opera. I also took the lead role in 'The Workhouse', which is a play written by Derry author Jack Scoltock. I was musical director for the Letterkenny music & drama group productions of Fiddler On The Roof, South Pacific & The Sound of Music for which I received the nominations : best musical director and best choral work at the Bangor International Festival Of Light Opera in 1995. I was very involved with both St. Eugene's & St. Columb's Cathedral choirs in Derry. I have been the resident pianist in a number of establishments most notably The Scandia restaurant - Central Belfast and The Fir Trees Hotel in Strabane. In 1996 I formed the Jazz duo 'Shades Of Blue' with Jazz singer Rachel ni Chnoic from Letterkenny. In September 1997 I embarked on the MSc in Music Technology to satisfy some of my creative desire and to try to bring myself up to date with some of the technology. The subjects included : C /C++, Max, Sound synthesis and manipulation, Studio recording, MIDI, Electroacoustic composition / Electronic Arts, Human computer interaction, Acoustics and physcoacoustics, Computational models of music. I designed an interactive Jazz / Blues tutor for the final thesis. I am intrigued by the possibilities of using technology in music education. In March 1999 I was asked to compose the music for a production of the Henry James play ' The turn of the screw' which was performed by the Granary players in the Beltable Theatre Limerick.
