The first project undertaken by the Society was the reading club with St. Enda’s school in Limerick. Students from UL travel to St. Enda’s where they take part in the reading clubs. It has proven to be a big success and enjoyed by all who take part.
A similar project was set up called the soccer for success project, whereby students from Limerick city come to UL, where they take part in a homework club overseen by Outreach members, once they’re finished their homework they attend a soccer training session. Again a big success.
Last year the Enable Ireland project was started, whereby members of the Outreach society assisted two students with cerebral palsy about the University. Thus allowing them to undertake a program of study in the University, which would otherwise be difficult if not impossible to do.
The society has also undertaken a number of fundraising activities. Such as a fashion show and slave auction in the stables courtyard (Davoh Donovan MC), which proved to be hilarious, and saw Students’ Union President Mick Phelan minus his shirt. Charity walks and raffles were also organised. In total £4000 was raised by the society, which saw $3000 donated to the Chernobyl children’s project and the remainder was put towards the purchase of water purification boxes for crisis regions.
