Manchester United History
The Treble Winners
Andy Cole

The 1998-99 season will be remembered for the magnificent treble winning achievements of Manchester United managed by Alex Ferguson.

No Manchester United Fan at the start of the season could imagine that at the end of May that United would have picked up three prestigous titles.

However, that is what happened this season. A season of many twists and turns from the bruising contests with the Arsenal, Chelsea, Barcelona and of course the mighty Bayern Munich.

Jesper Blomqvist

The season started with the arrivals of highly rated Jaap Stam from PSV Eindhoven and the mercurial talent that is Jesper Blomqvist who came to Manchester from Parma in Italy, but it was the transfer deal of Dwight Yorke that must be regarded as the best buy for Alex Ferguson in the summer of 1998. His contribution was immense and along with the ever improving Andy Cole formed a lethal strike force which spread fear into opponent Defences both home and abroad.

So United went into the season full of confidence with some impressive pre-season friendlies matches against Brondby and other Scandavian Clubs.

A comfortable 2-0 win over Lodz in the Champions League Qualifiers gave United another opportunity in the prestigous Champions League.

Meanwhile, back in Domestic Action United were not totally convincing in their early season performances. Nervy performances against Leicester and Arsenal at Highbury emphasised this fact.

But as the season wore on, United began to find good form with November especially sweet for United scoring 26 goals with 6 goals coming from the Brondby game at Copenhagen.

Their form in the Champions League continued in the League and the Cup as in early May, Manchester United had reached the FA Cup Final thanks in no measure to Peter Schmeichel's save against Arsenal in the FA Cup Semi-Final Replay which United won 2-1 after extra time.

The League had seen United draw 4 points clear of Arsenal in the title race, but slips against Wimbledon and Liverpool away from home gave the Gunners an opportunity to snatch the title away from Old Trafford. However, Leeds beat Arsenal 1-0 in the pendultimate game of the FA Carling Premiership League to virtually hand the title to United who managed to beat Spurs 2-1 in the last game of the season.

If the FA Carling Premiership was tense, then the FA Cup Final was a Sunday stroll for the United faithful as United easily accounted for Newcastle 2-0 at Wembley with Paul Scholes and Teddy Sheringham on the mark.

Ryan Giggs

It was to be an eventful 10 days for Teddy Sheringham who picked up 3 Winners medals in the space of 10 days and his contribution was vital in United clinching the famous Treble.

With time almost up, he levelled the scores in the Champions League Final and then 45 seconds supplied the header that gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the opportunity to score the winner.
