Manchester United History

Ferguson Era

Sir Alex

Scot Alex Ferguson was appointed in 1986 and to begin with, it looked as though he would go the same way as his predecessors. However, the FA Cup win of 1990 heralded the start of good times which were continued with the European Cup Winners Cup success a year later.

In 1992, Utd grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory as their late slip-up handed Leeds Utd the title but the advent of the Premier League finally saw them triumph 26 years after their previous title win. The following season saw Utd better this by winning the double, beating Chelsea 4-0 in the final.

United success continued on the Domestic front with another double winning season in 1996.The Premiership was clinched from Newcastle's grasp on the last week of the season. While the double was completed with a 1-0 win over arch rivals Liverpool courtesy of a 86 minute Eric Cantona special. This season was even more pleasing as the United introduced the "Fergie Babes" onto the First team. Little known players like David Beckham,Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes ignited onto the Domestic and World stage which resulted in England appearances.

The following season saw United win another League Title with the key moment of the season coming in Anfield in early spring when United aided by a brace from Andy Cole beat Title contenders Liverpool 3-1. This season saw the shock announcement that Eric Cantona was retiring from the game. "God" had said his last "Au voir".

The 1998 season was a barren one for United - No League or Cup wins while in the Champions League Monaco beat United in the Quarter-final stage.

The only bright spot in an otherwise disappointing season was the return to form of Andy Cole who show his critics where to stick their words by scoring 25 goals in the season.

However the disappointment of the 1998 season was quickly erased from the memory after the memorable treble winning season the following year.
