Busby returned to the manager's chair in time for the start of the 1958-59 season. He didn't rush into transfer market and decided to relie on the tried and trusted Youth Policy. A number of reserve team players were suddenly playing alongside the Munich survivors such as Warren Bradley,an International Amateur signed from Bishop Auckland.
Busby waited until a 1/4 way through the season to speculate on the transfer market. United's first signing of the season was Quixall who was a Centre-Forward for £45,000.United were to finish 2nd in the League,an amazing acheivement considering the events of the previous season.
The next two seasons saw United slump in League form. They finished 7th and 15th in respective seasons and Busby realised then he had a major problem. He solved it by buying David Herd,a potent goalscorer from Arsenal for £32,000,Pat Crerand from Celtic for £43,000 and his most successful and important signing Denis Law from Torino for £115,000.
The 1962-63 season saw United finish dangerously close to the relegation zone with a 19th place. However,United had reached the FA Cup Final where they faced Leicester at Wembley. The Old Trafford side aided by a brace from David Herd and one from Denis Law beat the Midlands Club 3-1. |
