Busby and United dreamed of European success against the might of Real Madrid and the legendary AC Milan.The 1955-56 season gave United the chance to acheive their dream.

United became the first English club to enter the European Cup and easily accounted for Anderlecht (12-0) in the Preliminary Round.Borussia Dortmund and Athletic Bilbao then followed.United were now in the semi-final where Real Madrid awaited.The Old Trafford side succumbed to Real Madrid 5-3 on aggregate.

However,United's performance in Europe had wetted the British appetite for European success.

The League success of 1956-57 gave United entry into the European Cup again,a campaign which was to end in tragedy.In the Preliminary Round,United beat Irish Champions Shamrock Rovers 9-2 on aggregate.The Czech Champions Dukla Prague followed and then came a Quarter-Final with Red Star Belgrade.

The first leg was played at Old Trafford on the 14th October 1958.United win 2-1 courtesy of strikes from Coleman and Bobby Charlton.However,within a month of this victory,this fine United side would be destroyed......Munich.
