Sir Matt Busby Era

Sir Matt Busby

On the 15th February 1945, the board of Manchester United appoint Matt Busby as the Club's new Manager.Busby's playing career was a splendid one playing with Liverpool and Manchester City.He was like Ernest Magnall as he revitalised the team into a success one winning honours both in Domestic and European Competition.

His managerial task was a tough one,for a start United had a £15,000 overdraft at the bank and as well as that Old Trafford was unplayable due to extensive damage caused as a result of the World War.The Main Stand and Dressing Rooms were severely damaged.

Busby was originally offered a 3 year contract but insisted on a 5 year contract so as to be given enough time to build an effective squad. He was given his wish and his first decision was to bring Jimmy Murphy in as Chief Coach.

At this time,United had several fine players which included Johnny Carey (Captain),Jack Rowley (Centre-Forward),John Aston and goalkeeper Jack Crompton.

Jimmy Delaney

Busby's first signing was the winger Jimmy Delaney from Celtic for £5,000 which turned out to be a very shrewd move.

The 1946-47 season saw United runners-up to Liverpool.

The following season saw United finish in second place in the league again and won the FA Cup for the second time.United accounted for Villa,Liverpool,Charlton,Preston and Derby in the semi-final.They would face Blackpool in the final,a side containing the talented Stanley Matthews and Stan Mortensen. However,United proved too strong winning 4-2, becoming the first side ever to win the FA Cup after being twice behind in a FA Cup Final.

The next two seasons saw United finish second in the League, but the Championship hoodoo was ended in the 1951-52 season when United won the Championship thanks in part to the contribution of Jack Rowley who scored 30 goals during the campaign. The Old Trafford side finished ahead of North London rivals Arsenal and Spurs.

In United's final game of the season at Old Trafford,Arsenal were simply hammered 6-1 by a rampant United side.
