Manchester United History

United

The turn of the century sees a downturn in the fortunes of Newton Heath. They are struggling in the middle of the Second Division and the Club are in dire financial problems.

A four day Fundraiser is held to solve the problem.A St.Bernard Dog owned by Harry Stafford (Club Captain) was one of the attractions. The dog had a collection box around it's neck and ran away with all the Club's fundraising money.

Fortunately, the dog is found by wealthy Businessman John Davies who hears about the Club's plight. He steps in in 1902 to save Newton Heath from extinction and takes a controlling interest in the Club.

Newton Heath is renamed on the 28th April 1902.It's new name is Manchester United,a name suggested by the legendary scout Louis Rocca. The strip is also changed to red shirts and white shorts and in their first season as Manchester United, they finish 5th in the League which is won by arch rivals Ardwick.

In September 1903,Secretary James West resigns and his position is taken by Ernest Magnall who was previously with Burnley.Magnall will become the first driving force at the Club and manages the team to third position in the League in his first two seasons. The 1905-06 season is a excellent one for United whom are promoted to the First Division as Second Division Champions. In 1907-08 season,United get even better and win the First Division League Title for the first time in their history.

Magnall has now assembled a very talented squad with players of the calibre of Welsh Wizard Billy Meredith and Charlie Roberts in their ranks. In 1908,the Club wins the first ever Charity Shield beating QPR 4-0 after a replay.

The following season sees United again in the final of the FA Cup.They play Bristol City in the final showdown at Crystal Palace and win 1-0 with the winner scored by Sandy Turnbull.A magnificent victory considering that United had to beat all top quality First Division sides to advance to the final.
