My Diary of Euro 2000: Group Stages. Saturday 17th June The first week of the tournament had passed off without any incident, but today painted an entirely different picture on the tournament. English yobs started rioting in Chareloi, just hours before the Germany match. Amid disgraceful scenes, the game got the go ahead and the English won 1-0 courtesy of an Alan Shearer effort. After the game, UEFA warn England's supporters about their future conduct... when have we heard that before!. The second game in the group was the meeting of Romania and Portugal. The Iberian men buoyed up by their fantastic win over England controlled the game throughout and grabbed a deserved late winner from Costinha to secure all three points. SundayAnother night on the town was followed by a Super Sunday of Football. Group C saw Yugoslavia beat a shocking Norway 1-0 courtesy of a Savo Milosevic strike, Spain recorded their first win in the competition with a hard earned 2-1 win over a spirited Slovenia. It is neck and neck in the group for the two spots in the quarter final stage. Tuesday A rest day on Monday is followed by the conclusion of the group phase in England's group. England took on Romania knowing that a draw or a win would see them through, but Romania were looking for the second spot as well and opened the scoring midway through the opening period courtesy of Chiznau. England fought back though and were in front at the interval thanks to an Alan Shearer penalty and Michael Owen effort. That should have signalled the end of the Eastern European country's challenge but far from die, Romania came out with all guns blazing in the second half. Munteanu capitalised on some weak goalkeeping from Martyn to level the scores. Keegan's team entered the last minute knowing that Portugal were beating Germany 3-0. England were holding on for the precious point needed to get into the last eight. However, disaster struck Keegan's men when Phil Neville mistimed his tackle and gave Romania a penalty which they scored. England were out and everyone was laughing at them again. Wednesday Belgium crashed out of the competition after losing 2-0 to Turkey. Hakan Suker was the hero for the Turks scoring twice to send Turkey to their first ever European Championship quarter-final. Italy finished as group winners after beating Sweden 2-1, goals from Albertini and Del Piero sealed victory. Thursday For excitment, this had to be the day of the tournament. Yugoslavia, Spain, Slovenia and Norway all had the chance to reach the quarter-finals, the matches that were produced were nothing short of breath-taking. Yugoslavia v Spain was a classic. Spain were down and out midway through the second half when Yugoslavia went 2-1 and 3-2 up. With time running out, it looked like Spain were joining Slovenia out of the competition. That was until, the referee gave Spain hope when Abelardo was alleged to have been brought down in the box. The penalty was slotted home by Mendieta and the Spaniards needed one more goal to go through. This prompted a mass invasion of Spanish bodies into the Yugoslavian penalty area and unbelievably they scored with the last kick of the game. The crowd went ballistic, Norway were out, Spain were in and Yugoslavia did not know what had hit them!. Friday The last set of matches in the group stage saw the Dutch beat the "French Reserves" 3-2 in the Amsterdam Arena. Czech Republic recorded their first win in the competition beating the hapless Danes 2-0.
