Course of Study

Bachelor of Technology Degree in Information Technology & Telecommunications.
This course was created at the University of Limerick 4 years ago because of the growing need of IT capable graduates with a strong understanding of all types of IT and Telecommunications in software and hardware.

Briefly we have studied areas such as modulation schemes, compression, Networks Protocols (ISDN, TCP/IP), Operating Systems ( UNIX, DOS/Windows etc), Languages (Modula-2, C), Modem technology, Database systems and much more..

A compete Transcript is availale from the Offical College W3 server.

The elective I am choosing for Semester 8, my last semester is Advanced Graphics & Display systems.

Examples of Software experience

Title Level of Experience
Multimedia ToolBook 3.0 I used this MM authoring package for 8 months while on work experience in WiSO, Germany. The project consisted of a Computer Based Training Program on Neural Networks. I programmed in the OpenScript langauge included in the Package, including a Back Propagation Neural Network.
Adobe Photoshop 3.0 Premiere I used Photoshop to create almost all of the graphics in the above project. It is usually my first choice for creating graphics for MM or W3 pages.
Autodesk 3D Studio This again was used in the above project, usually for visualising the error space of Neural Networks. Some animations are available, but you must have a viewer capable of viewing FLICs. Note that the sizes range from 150K to 2.5 Megabytes.

I also used 3D studio to create animations for Company logos and experimenation.

Some of the VRML work I have done was modelled in 3D studio. I hope to some examples on line soon.

NewTek Lightwave I have novice experience with this package, I use it mostly for animation and VRML authoring. The Skynet logo was created by me about 2 years ago. (I have got better since then - honest..)
HTTP / W3 server software I have extensive experience setting up HTTP/W3 servers on almost every platform e.g. Sun SPARC, Digital DECstation, Linux x86, Windows, Amiga.

I am co-Webadm on this Linux W3 server Skynet. I setup and helped design Multimedia Technologies Irelands Webserver.

I have familiarity with NCSA, CERN & Apache type servers(i.e. 95%).

Most of my W3 work is concerned with Common Gateway Interface (CGI) binaries, i.e. search engines, guestbooks e.g. MTIs Guestbook, VRML generators e.g. Cyberclock , frontends to Neural Networks etc. I write these programs in C.

Want one done quickly?Mail me!.

TCP/IP & other protocols As implied by above I have quite a lot of experience with TCP/IP networking & configuration on all major platforms. I am also familiar with Lan Manager & NetBios protocols as used by Windows etc.

I have some simple TCP/IP programming experience under UNIX/C (BSD scokets etc.)

Part of my course work involved networks & protocols including ISDN, ATM, ethernet, token ring, token bus and such concepts as the 7 OSI layers, compression, multiplexing etc. The complete course structure is available.

Other Interests & Experience

Campus TV

I was chairman of Campus TV from 1993-1995. Campus TV is a society in the University of Limerick for people interested in all aspects of Video production. We also provide services to other Societies & clubs in that we will record & edit/archive events for them. Occasionally we are involved in commericially recording events or making advertisements. However this is only to supplement our budget and is not the main aim of the society.

Skills I have aquired by working with this society include:

  • Camera skills:
      CCD semi-professional & professional Cameras.
  • Editing skills:
Assemble & Insert editing on S-VHS,Hi8,Betacam/Umatic quality analog equipment. This complements my non-linear digital editing skills in Adobe Premire which I used both in MTI and in Germany.
  • Production & Post-production skills:
By working in collaboration with other companines I learned valueable production skills in the general area of video production. Post production skills such as editing, dubbing and using computer for titles (including 3D studio).
  • Technical skills:
Interfacing of various video standards, use of Genlocks & blue screens. Connecting and control of VTR (Panasonic AG series) to computer using RS232 protocol.
