In Summer 2009, I supervised Jianhua Shao's summer project as part of
UCD's ODCSSS programme. Jian wrote software implementing a novel
approach to evolutionary music, in which interactive grammatical
evolution was used to create a mapping from gestural inputs (from the
mouse or a Wii remote) to midi outputs. Our paper (Shao, McDermott,
O'Neill, and Brabazon, 2010, "Jive: A Generative, Interactive,
Virtual, Evolutionary Music System") won the EvoMUSART best paper
award. Details of the project
are
available
here.
2009-2010 I supervised Caoileann Appleby's masters project in
computational linguistics. Caoileann studied the evolution of word
order using an Optimality Theory model.
