LIMERICK TITLE GOES wEST

County SENIOR FOOTBALL Championship FinalOCTOber 24TH,1992,at THE GAELIC GROUNDS,limerick.

NEWCASTLE WEST......................................................................................2-04

HOSPITAL-HERBERTSTOWN......................................................................1-06

Newcastle West took the Limerick football championship crown for the second time with a slender win over Hospital-Herbertstown in a dramatic final played before 4,000 people at the Gaelic Grounds yesterday.

Most of the excitement was packed into the final quarter, at which stage the South Limerick club trailed 2-3 to 0-5. Stepping up the tempo, they pounded the Newcastle West defence, but a series of terrible misses deprived them of making up for last season's lapse at the hands of Glenacurrane Rovers.

John Breen eventually found the net after 52 minutes to leave it 2-3 to 1-5, but Newcastle, fearing the title might be slipping away from them, went downfield for Seán Kelly to give them some breathing space with a point a minute later.

Again Hospital went on the offensive, but had to wait until the 60th minute for PJ Garvey to get his second point of the game. However, in the additional six minutes of injury time, they failed in their bid to snatch a replay.

Garvey and Tom Dee had them two points ahead in the opening minutes, but John Power hit a glorious point from 30 yards and followed with a thundering goal that gave Sean Kiely no chance, to leave them ahead,1-1 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Play was very tight afterwards with just two more scores in the half, the crucial one for Newcastle West coming from a long delivery from Denis King which was fisted to the net by Seán Kelly after 25 minutes.

The west team played the better football in that half but their 2-1 to 0-3 lead did not look too comfortable.

Seán Kelly added another point on the resumption, but two points from former Kerry minor Tom Dee kept Hospital in the hunt for honours.

It was tough luck on Hospital that they should have failed for the second time in two years but while they had their misses,so too did their opponents who shot 7 wides in a 12 minute spell in the first half.

Congratulations to Newcastle West and especially the Lee brothers,Joe who captained the team and Billy who received the man of the match award.
