Case Study: T/TCP Performance Over Suggested HTTP Improvements

The idea of a transaction has already been discussed in section 4.1. With the world wide web being the prime example of client-server transaction processing nowadays, this chapter will focus on the benefits of T/TCP to the performance of the web.

Currently the HTTP protocol sits in the application layer of the TCP/IP reference model. It uses the TCP protocol to carry out all its operations, UDP being too unreliable. There is a lot of latency involved in the transfer of information, the three way handshake and the explicit shutdown exchanges being the examples. Using the criteria specified in section 4.1 it is apparent that the world wide web's operation is one of transactions.
