UL Fianna Fáil at 70ú Ard-Fheis

Members of UL Ógra Fianna Fáil attended the Party’s 70ú Ard-Fheis at the Citywest Hotel, Saggart, on the 4th of November. It was a fervently anticipated event, with delegates interested in hearing from the senior members of the cabinet as well as other parliamentary party members and election candidates. The members of UL’s Con Colbert Cumann saw little of each other for most of the evening while getting to know many Fianna Fáil members from as far away as Belfast, Waterford, Donegal and Dún Laoighre.

The event was wholly successful and was attended by Irish ambassadors from 33 countries as well as the Taoiseach’s son-in-law Nicky Byrne with his stunning wife Georgina Ahern. The Celtic Tenors provided excellent pre-speech entertainment with renditions of “Star of the County Down” and the classic “You Raise Me Up”, as well as many more. In excess of 5,000 members of Fianna Fáil flocked from far and wide to attend this Ard-Fheis marking 80 years of Fianna Fáil, which bodes well for the upcoming election Ard-Fheis next March where many more will be in attendance.

Members of the cumann discussed canvassing strategies with John Dennehy TD from Cork, GAA with Enterprise, Trade and Employment Minister;Micheál Martin(which got quite heated) and a few members again impressed upon Education Minister, Mary Hanafin, the importance of the addition of a medical school to UL. The discussion went on until mid-morning with some members not making it to bed until after light on the cold November Sunday morning.

Following an informal de-brief over breakfast, all UL members in attendance were agreed that they thoroughly enjoyed the Ard-Fheis and look forward to meeting all of the new friend that were made over the weekend at next year’s National Youth Conference in February and the Election Ard-Fheis next March. But between now and then all members of the Con Colbert Cumann will promote the impeccable record of our party in government which has seen the country prosper and in the words of Mary Hanafin

“What we need is a continuation of the Bertie era. For we all know exactly what the era of Enda would be like; the End-a the boom; the End-a the peace process; the End-a low taxes, the End-a the road…..Our focus will be on the future. We will continue to work with the Irish people, to listen to their needs, address their concerns and build a stronger, fairer Ireland.”
