Secondary School Education:
1991 – 1997 Ardscoil Rís, North Circular Road, Limerick City.
1994 – 1995 Transition Year: Certificate of Distinction
Sat Leaving Certificate in 1997 and
graduated with honours in seven Higher Level Subjects.
Previous Work Experience
12th June 2000 – 8th September 2000
Summer job with Arup Consulting Engineers, Hartstonge Street, Limerick.
Duties included the calculation of pipe diameters for water supply to and drainage from buildings, as well as air conditioning loads. I also, on my own initiative, designed a spreadsheet to automate these calculations, more than tripling the speed at which results can be generated, as well as allowing different scenarios to be tested quickly without restarting the calculations and giving a neat, legible printout for filing.
I completely sorted and catalogued the 500+ binders in the company library, computerising the list as I worked, allowing employees to search for keywords in order to find all the relevant catalogues on a given topic. I sometimes travelled out on site with other engineers to survey work being done on buildings for the company, as well as performing one of these surveys unassisted.
13th June 1999 – February 2000
Co-operative Education work experience placement in Cameron Willis Ireland Ltd., Aghafad Industrial Estate, Longford.
Duties included using AutoCAD to design tools for the assembly of new products, as well as using tolerance stackups to check drawings for potential errors in tolerances and interference between parts when the product is assembled. I also helped maintain the company’s factory acceptance test documentation and used Mathcad to produce a standardised design file for stress calculations in new and existing products.
Another of my duties was to photograph defects in returned products and to photograph finished products prior to shipping. I was also in communication with suppliers in the ordering of new parts and confirming the suitability of these parts for their intended use.
May 1999 – 12th Jun 1999
Event co-ordinator for the UK and Ireland Corporate Games cross-country mountain bike race.
This involved exploring the race venue, deciding on a route, marking the course and employing and managing a team of marshals for the race itself.
Jun 1995 – Aug 1995, Jun 1996 – Aug 1996,
Saturdays from Sep 1996 – Dec 1996, Dec 1998, Dec 2000, Sept2001, Dec
2001, Dec 2002
Employed as a Mechanic and Sales Assistant in ‘The Bike Shop,’ O’Connell Avenue, Limerick.
Duties Included assembly and quality checks on new bicycles prior to their sale. Dealing with customers on a one to one basis, repairing bicycles for customers, advising customers on equipment suitable for the cycling they intend to do. I also helped maintain next day service for repairs. I was often trusted to supervise the shop while its owner was out.
Computer Experience
I have experience in using AutoCAD releases 13 and 14 with Mechanical Desktop, for 2D and 3D work. I have completed two modules on release 13 in UL. I have completed a module on Finite Element Analysis using ProMechanica and have considerable experience in the use of this package, combined with ProEngineer, which I taught myself to use. Both packages were used extensively in my final year project and in other design related projects, including an award winning spirit dispenser design, presented for the Product Design and Development module in UL. I also taught myself to use Mathcad while working in Longford.
As a tutorial assistant I have also taught second and fourth year mechanical engineering students to use ProDesktop, another 3D CAD package for the past 4 semesters, as well as acting as a tutorial assistant for a ProEngineer module for which I devised and supervised the project work.I am currently lecturing this module this semester.
Other computer experience includes the programming of Mitsubishi PLC’s, writing Fortran programs and writing web pages in html. As an engineering student in UL, I was expected to present laboratory reports in typewritten form for several modules a semester. In order to do this effectively, an in depth knowledge of Word and Excel and the integration of these packages is essential. As a member of the Computer Society in UL, I am also used to working in a Linux environment.
As regards the learning of new packages, I am largely self-taught. In most cases, I can become reasonably proficient at a package I have never used before in a matter of weeks, particularly if help files and sample programs are available.
Hobbies and Interests
Mountain Biking is my main pastime, and I cycle at least once every weekend with friends. I also have an interest in observed trials riding for mountain bikes. At present I am the coach and mechanic for the UL Mountain Bike Club, as well as keeping parts of the web site updated (See: http://www.skynet.ie/~ceason for my Final Year Project and Mountain Biking information). I was the founding chairman of the mountain bike club. My other interests include films, engineering design, science, motorsport and most machinery. I also enjoy playing badminton, reading and swimming.
Other Qualifications/Extra Information
I presently hold a full ‘B’ (Car) and ‘W’ (Agricultural Vehicle) category drivers licence with no endorsements and an up to date Irish passport. I also have basic first aid training.
